It’s a double whammy soon for AP economy with respect to the manufacture of smartphones. Xiaomi, which had set up its first plant in Sri City in 2015, is all set to double its operations. The Chinese Smartphone giant will open its second assembly plant in partnership with Foxconn at Sri City. This will make Xiaomi one of the leading manufacturers of smartphones in India.
The present plant has a production capacity of 2 million units and up churning out every quarter. The new plant will make Xiaomi race ahead of other peers in India such as Intext, Micromax and Samsung in terms of handset production.
The plant that is spread across 65,000 sq ft will have production lines for most of Xiaomi’s smartphones that are sold locally. Set up by the world’s largest contract manufacturer Foxconn, Xiaomi is getting close to attaining full capacity.
At present, Xiaomi sells between 1 million and 1.5 million phones every quarter from Foxconn’s existing facility. Over 75 per cent of these phones are made locally. Samsung holds first place in the list of country’s largest phone manufacturers, both smart and feature phones. Intex and Micromax are said to produce 3 million and 2 million phones every month respectively.
